Spindle Palm (Hyophorbe verschaffeltii)

The spindle palm has a very unique shape trunk, that is swollen in the centre for a spindle shape. Trunk is grey, smooth, prominently ringed with the scars of shed fronds. The crown shaft is bright green with fronds arching outward and down at the end, forming a “V’ shape. Leaves are pinnate, or feather-like. The Spindle palm is a growing palm that can reach heights of 6m. It can be grown indoors or outdoors, it also has a cold tolerance of -1 degrees Celsius. It prefers a full sun protected position but will also grow in part shade. It grows best in moist well drained soil. If lacking in nutrients  apply good quality palm fertiliser that is slow release twice a year during its growing season.
